Engineered Fir Flooring in Bellingham, WA
Today, many flooring projects use LVP, laminate, or prefinished wood products designed for quick, economical installation. For this waterfront cottage in Bellingham’s Chuckanut neighborhood, we took the traditional approach, drawing on 40 years of flooring experience. Wolf Build and Restore installed unfinished, long-length engineered fir planks, sanded the floor on site, and applied a custom finish to achieve the color specified by the designer. The work also included leveling the subfloor over radiant heat, custom fitting the flooring around a natural river rock fireplace, and applying a protective Bona Traffic satin finish.
Subfloor Preparation Over Radiant Heat
We applied self leveling compound to create a flat, consistent subfloor surface before installing the engineered fir flooring. The planks were installed over radiant heat using a full-spread trowel application of urethane flooring adhesive.
Long length Plank Layout and Custom Fireplace Scribing
We carefully arranged the long length fir planks to create a natural, balanced layout, staggering the end joints to avoid placing them too close together.
At the river rock fireplace, each cut required careful fitting to follow the irregular stone edge. Scribing the flooring to the natural contours of the fireplace created a clean transition between the wood flooring and stone.
Professional Sanding and Satin Finish
After installation, we sanded the unfinished flooring using our German made Lagler Hummel, Trio and floor sanding equipment. We then applied Bona Traffic satin finish for a protective surface with a subtle sheen that complements the natural character of the fir.
